This week we were treated to a performance by a quartet from the Calgary Philharmonic.  The students really enjoyed hearing familiar songs from movies and video games.

I Can See 2D Shapes in the World Around Me

We took our math learning outside to the playground this week.  We were on the look out for different geometric shapes that can be found in school playground.  Students looked carefully for different shapes and then sketched them into their visual journals.

I Can Locate Letter Keys on a Keyboard

This week we practiced logging onto the Chromebooks and Google Classroom.  After everyone got successfully logged in, we worked on learning the home row through a fun online typing game.  There was a lot of discussion around what was better - speed or accuracy.

Literacy:

This week we continued reviewing short vowel sounds in CCVC and CVCC words.  We were reminded how important it is to look at all letters in a word and to think about how the order changes meaning.  For example, pets and pest.  If we are reading too quickly and read the wrong word, we may not fully understand the meaning of what we are reading.

Sorry, I didn't take any pictures this week.  Here's what we did this week:

Math:

We've started learning about shapes over the last few weeks.  We have been learning about the difference between geometric and organic shapes.  We learned proper shape names and have talked about the attributes of geometric shapes.  

Literacy:

We spent the week reviewing vowel sounds.  Next week we will move onto the FLOSS rule.

Science:

We worked on planning out our mini-golf project.  We did some research on the ipads into possible theme ideas and course designs.  We still need some cereal sized boxes for this project.

Social Studies:

This week we planned and completed an opinion piece about what kind of community students would like to live in.

    Welcome back!  I hope everyone had a restful and relaxing winter break.  It was great to see everyone back at school.

    This week we started working on creative storytelling using loose parts.  Students were given free reign to build a setting and choose any characters they wanted.  Working alone or with a partner, students were then asked to come up with a story they could tell someone else.  As we continue building our storytelling skills in the coming weeks we will also include drawing a picture and writing simple sentences to share our stories.

I Can Create 2D Shapes

This week we started exploring 2D shapes by making them with different manipulatives.  Here are some things that we already know:

*  shapes need to be closed in, otherwise they are just a line

*  there are organic and geometric shapes

*  we can use attributes to sort and classify shapes.

Literacy:

This week we reviewed the short vowel sounds /a/ and /i/.

Thank you to all the amazing volunteers who made our day at the Inglewood Bird Sanctuary possible.  Whether you came with us on the trip or you volunteered with Stampede Parking or a Casino.  Everyone had an amazing day out on the land looking for evidence of the urban wildlife in Calgary!

This week we also had a chance to work with our grade 4 buddies to create a prototype for a winter problem.

Literacy:

Over this week and next week as well, we have been wrapping up our study the sounds for all the alphabet.  Our final letters are j, y, x, qu, v, and z.

Just a reminder that tomorrow is our field trip to the Inglewood Bird Sanctuary.  This is a winter themed field trip and will be outside for a majority of the day.  Please ensure your child is dressed for the weather.  Your child will also need a snack, lunch, water bottle, and an empty backpack.

I Can Create a Work of Art Using Different Colours of Paint

We used watercolours to create a sunset scene.  Students had to be careful to make sure they cleaned their brush in-between each colour so they could get a nice banding of colour to represent the sunset.

We will be hosting an open house during this time, where families can participate in various activities that celebrate the season and give back to our community. We will be donating all of our creations to various local organizations. We encourage families to bring a food donation for the Calgary Food Bank that evening. Please join us any time between 5:30 and 7:30 for family fun, including crafts, singing, stories, refreshments, and more. Since this is a family event, we expect all attending students to be supervised by their families.

This week (and last week) we learned about the artist Henri Matisse and his work with stained glass.   He created stained glass and wall murals  for a chapel in Vence, France shortly after WWII.  He agreed to take on this commission as a form of gratitude for a nurse that had helped him recover from cancer.

We learned that art was often made up of organic and geometric shapes.  For this project we focused on cutting organic shapes from paper to create our own "stained glass windows".  We are not quite done this project and will finish our last step next week.

This week in social studies, we continued learning about different community types.  Students worked on representing urban communities in their visual journals.

I Can Use the Scientific Method to Answer a Question

This week we continued to explore how things move.  We tested similar items to determine which one slid down an incline plane (ramp) faster.  We completed trials, compared the results to those of other groups, and then made some observations.

Literacy:

This week we worked with the letters and sounds for  h /h/ and k /k/.  We also learned about the letter s making a /z/ sound at the end of some words.  If the final consonant is a voiced consonant, the s is pronounced as a /z/ when a word is made plural (e.g. dogs - /d/ /o/ /g/ /z/).

We have also been working on writing complete sentences that include a beginning capital, end punctuation, a 'who', and a 'doing'.

Math:

In math we have been continuing to work on recognizing and representing numbers 20 - 50 in different ways.  We can use base ten blocks and tallies to represent larger numbers more efficiently.  

We have also been working on mastering our immediate recall of 5 pairs.  5 pairs are two numbers that add up to 5 (0+5, 1+4, 2+3). 

We have also been talking about the commutative property of addition - how moving the order of the numbers does not affect the answer.
