Week 39

Oki!

This week we recognized National Indigenous Peoples Day and the summer solstice.  On Tuesday, we watched the Niipo Solstice Teachings from Elder Saa'kokoto.  We were reminded that when we see the beauty that is brought by the summer season to have gratitude and work in harmony with mother earth.

We spent some time throughout the week exploring different Indigenous peoples through the lens of math.

Coast Salish People (British Columbia)

We looked at some of the patterns that can be found in traditional weaving and then we tried to create our own patterns using pattern blocks and paper.  We also had an opportunity to try our hand at some simple weaving with yarn.

Mi'Kmaq 

We made a beaded counting device and then used them to keep track of points while we played the game 'Waltes' (pronounced WALT'-iss).  

Math Stories from Simon Fraser University

We watched a couple of math stories and worked together to explore the math that was found in the story.

Math Stories

Students found the 'Small Number Counts to 100' particularly challenging and many solved the riddle of where Aunt Rena's tipi was by counting up all the way to 100.

Activity Day

On Friday we had some wonderful activities planned out by Ms. Serra and Ms. Yasin and led by Ms. Halima and some members of student council.  We even got to work with our grade 5/6 buddies on Lasso Art.  Everyone had a lot of fun!  Thank you to our parent council for arranging for us to have a hot dog lunch.  All the students very much appreciated it!

Ms. Yasin's Math Group:

During this last week in math with Ms. Yasin, students had the opportunity to work on ordinal numbers and then review their number sense learning from the year. Students learned a new medium to do this through: Kahoot! This is an online space where you can find quizzes (from all subjects) to play with your peers! Everyone did an amazing job listening to instructions and then navigating the process through their ipads.

Week 37

 

This week we had our field trip, our grade 5/6 buddies taught us how to make paper airplanes, and we had our Book Character Dress Up day.

Week 36

What a beautiful week we had - the weather was so great and we took advantage and spent some time learning outdoors.  We will probably be spending more time outdoors in the next few weeks.  Please help your child to be prepared by sending water bottles, sunscreen, hats, and sweaters (for those cool days).  

We had a great walk on Wednesday and spent some time looking for a special rock.  We read the book "Everybody Needs a Rock" by Byrd Baylor that helped us to know the ten rules for finding a special rock.

After we found our rocks we took some time to slow down and listen to the sounds of nature.

We also had the chance to go outside and sketch the big tree in the school yard.  Students were asked to first far away and sketch the whole tree and then were asked to move closer and sketch a close up of the tree.

We also spent some time writing a short poem based on Leah Dorion's poem, "Water" from "Poems to Honor Mother Earth"

Ms. Paradis' Math Group

We started off this week exploring shapes and patterns.  We looked at the patterns in mandalas and the created our own with loose parts.  Afterwards we sketched them in our math books.  Later in the week we did a lot of work with looking at the conservation of number by writing multiple number sentences with the same number.  We used ten frames, a 'part, part, whole' model, and number bond model to help strengthen our understanding.

Ms. Yasin's Math Group

Ms. Yasin's math group worked hard on their subtraction skills this week! They focused on subtraction word problems where visualizing the questions was helpful to understand why subtraction was needed to solve it. Then students had a chance to write their own word problems! The group finished off the week with learning something new and exciting: regrouping!! They learned that regrouping happens when we add two numbers together and there are enough ones to exchange for a ten, so that we can group the new ten with the other tens we have! Students were very curious while doing this using place value and base 10 blocks and were regrouping superstars by the end of the week! They enjoyed it so much that they had a chance to explore how to regroup via the algorithm strategy as well! Everyone should be incredibly proud of themselves for all their hard work and learning this week!
