March 11 - 15

    Phew!  We packed a lot into this week!  We finished off our week with a birthday celebration for the whole class.  After singing "Happy Birthday" to everyone, we created personal paintings and explored nutrition by making english muffin pizzas and banana-berry smoothies (or milkshakes as the kids called them).  It was a fun way to end our week.

Music Update

Our grade 1 and 2  students excelled in music in February. They performed Stephanie Leavell's "K-I-N-D" at our school assembly with great enthusiasm and confidence. Additionally, students worked diligently in class on the rhythm and xylophone parts for our new ensemble pieces "Peter Rabbit" and "Rain on the Green Grass". The dedication and teamwork of the grade 1 and 2 students were evident throughout the month, reflecting their hard work and musical accomplishments.

I Can Examine the Physical Properties of an Object

This week on our community walk we focused on looking at the various textures that we could find.  We found many man-made and natural textures.  We were able to document our finding by taking imprints using play-dough.

It's been great to see a return to sunshine and warmer temperatures this week.  Just a reminder that students don't just wear snow/rain pants for the colder temperatures but also because it allows them to engage more deeply in outdoor play without being uncomfortable for the rest of the day.  Wearing wet or damp pants after playing in the snow at recess is not a lot of fun for anyone!  Thank you for continuing to help your child dress for the weather and outdoor play/learning times.

I Can Directly Compare the Length of Various Objects

This week we have been exploring measurement concepts in math and science.  Students are working on building a comparative language vocabulary (example - smaller, medium, biggest, etc.) that will allow them to clearly and effectively communicate their mathematical thinking both when working with measurement and when making observations during science.  Students used pompoms to measure various classroom objects and then determined which one was smallest, medium, and longest.

I Can Describe Physical Changes that Result from Various Actions

Students worked on their observational skills by making close sketches of a pop can before and after it was crushed.

Literacy:

This week we worked on the long vowel patterns e_e and u_e.

They did amazing!  You should all be so proud of your children - they all worked so hard and did so well for both of our assemblies this week.  Thank you to all the parents who were able to join us, everyone was so excited to see you all there.  A big thank you to Ms. Mandin aswell - the song they sang was beautiful.  

Welcome!

We'd like to welcome Ms. F, a pre-service teacher, from St. Mary's University to our class.  She will be joining us daily until the end of April as she finishes her final practicum in her journey to becoming a teacher.

I Can Document Signs of Seasonal Changes Over Time:

This week we snuck outside before the snow came to visit the tamarack trees.  We took an opportunity to make some observations of the seasonal changes the tree undergoes.  So far we have been able to observe the trees in the summer, fall, and now the winter.  We look forward to seeing how the trees change as the spring season approaches.

Literacy:

This week we've been working on the magic e and how it makes the /a/, /i/, and /o/ say their names and make long vowel sounds.  Check out this video that tells a story to help students remember.
