What a wonderful week!  The weather has finally changed and we were able to move our classroom outdoors for some learning.  We enjoyed our community walk to the Elbow River to make some observations of the Osprey and their nest.  We also were able to take a mindful moment to sit by the river and listen to the sounds of nature.

I Can Compare Two Objects and Describe Them as Shorter or Longer

This week students were given the challenge to determine which bench by the playground was longer - the blue one or the wooden one.  Students worked in small groups to figure out how they could measure and prove which one was longer.

First they wanted to measure by using the number of kids who could sit on the bench.

Then a group found a left-behind skipping rope and came up with a new plan.

One group saw I had a roll of tape and asked to use that.  I worked fairly well until the wind blew the tape into a sticky knot.

One group was given a box of paperclips and were asked if they thought those could be helpful.

Another group found some popsicle sticks to use.

Literacy

This week we worked on the /er/ sound.

This week we said, "goodbye", to Ms. Kehoe.  Ms. Kehoe was a student teacher from St. Mary's University that was working with our class for the past ten weeks.  She will be deeply missed by all and we wish her all the luck as she starts her career as a teacher.

Calgary Zoo Field Trip

On Monday we had our field trip to the Calgary Zoo to learn more about butterflies and their life cycle.  It was an amazing day!  We also had an opportunity to explore the zoo with our wonderful volunteers.  Thank you so much for making the day a success.  I'd also like to thank the School Council and the Parent Association for funding our trip.  

Earth Day Clean Up

On Thursday we went out with Ms. Rowland's class to clean up the park around the community garden.  We managed to fill an entire garbage bag with everything we picked up!

Literacy

This week we reviewed the spelling patterns ar, or, are.  Here is some practice that you can do at home.

Math

This week we worked on showing what we know about representing addition and subtraction with concrete materials, pictures, and with abstract number sentences.

We have been incredibly lucky to have Ms. Kehoe join us for the last ten weeks as a pre-service teacher (student teacher) and she will be sorely missed when she leaves us on Tuesday morning!  She will be graduating in June and has already accepted a position as a guest teacher with the CBE.  So hopefully we will still get the chance to see her at our school in last few remaining months of this school year.  We will have some time for goodbyes on Tuesday morning where we will give her a surprise that we as a class made for her.  Students are also welcome to make and bring in their own drawings and cards as a farewell sendoff.

I Can Make Models or Objects Using Many Different Materials:

This week Ms. Kehoe challenged us to build a functioning parachute that could hold an object and used at least three different building materials.  Once we were done building, we brought them outside to test them.

I Can Explain How Stories and Events from the Past Connect to my Family and Community Today:

Ms. Kehoe has led us through some reflections around ourselves and our families.  We worked together to connect our individual experiences and values to create a whole class identity tree.

Incubation Update:

We candled our eggs on Wednesday and were able to see some veining inside.  We also learned that as eggs develop, these veins connect to the yolk as food supply for the developing embryo.

This week we had a special addition to our classroom!  For the next four weeks our tiny new additions will we spending time between our classroom and Ms. Rowland's classroom.   Everyone was very excited and curious to see what might hatch from our eggs.

I Can Examine My Personal Feelings and Emotions to Better Understand Myself and Others

This week Ms. Kehoe led us through some mindfulness activities and guided us through some self-reflection around what makes our brains happy.  Students were asked to identify three things that make our brain happy and share it through writing and/or pictures.

Literacy

This week we learned about words ending in 'y' and when they make long e or long i sounds.  We learned that 'y' at the end of a single syllable word (ex. fly, sky) makes a long i sound and words with more than one syllable (ex. puppy, kitty) makes a long e sound.

All students have been working in small groups with an adult (Ms. Paradis, Ms. Kehoe, and Ms. MacLeod) to strengthen their reading skills.

This week worked on number sense by continuing to develop our skills in addition and subtraction.  We also had a chance to start working on understanding how visuals like a concrete graph can help us analyze data and answer questions.

Finally!!! We are finally moving into warmer weather.  It feels like it has been a long time coming!  As the weather warms up I would like to remind families that we often go outside for learning opportunities and in order for students feel and be successful they need to be prepared.  Having them pack things like hats, water bottles, sunscreen, and weather-appropriate clothing will help them be more comfortable.

I Can Learn on the Land / I Can Find Signs of Spring / I Can Observe the Living Things Around Me

This week we went on a community walk and found signs of spring.  We noticed things like early magpie nests, buds on trees, grass turning green, and we observed changes in the river (melting ice, cloudy water, etc.).  It was a great chance for us to get out and learn on the land.  We also took some time to sketch and journal the living and non-living things we observed

Literacy:

Last week students worked on the long u sounds that are made by adding e to the end of a word.  They have also been practicing the with the other bossy e sounds (long a, i, and o).

The high frequency words they worked on were: by, only, my, very, them

Math:

Students have been working on developing an understanding of math strategies for adding (doubles, near doubles, using ten) and subtracting within 20.  As these strategies become fluent, they will form the foundation for mental math skills in adding and subtracting much larger numbers.
