Over the past couple of weeks we have started a research project on animals from Alberta.  We've been using ebooks on the ipad.  After choosing an animal, we've been learning about how to take notes and then use those notes to write a sentence.  

I Can Create Artwork Based on Natural Forms

Over the past two weeks we have been working on an art project based on the Coast Salish artist, Susan Point.  We used her stain glass work, "The Tree of Life" as a starting off point to start our work.  After looking closely at the work, we noticed that Susan Point included a tree, mountains, and water.  We then started off our own work by creating a basic sketch of a natural scene.  We then carefully glued on strings to trace our lines.  After the glue was dried, we carefully covered our work with tinfoil.  To finish off our work, we coloured the depressions in the foil with coloured sharpies. 

I Can Use Strategies to Help Me Add and Subtract

We've been working up on using doubles facts to help us add and subtract within twenty.  Knowing our doubles and thinking about near doubles (e.g. 3+4) can help us do math in our heads without pencil/paper or manipulatives.  To help cement our knowledge we created a visual journal page showing different facts of our choosing.

Literacy:

This week we learned about when y makes a long i or e sound at the end of words.  We also learned about the ending -le.

This week we went up the hill to the community garden to help clean up garbage in belated honour of Earth Day.  Everyone took their job very seriously and were very competitive in trying to find trash to pick up.  We also had a sharing circle to talk about the gratitude we felt for Na'ha (mother earth)

I Can Recognize How Communities Were Different in the Past Than How They Are Today:

This week in social studies we have been talking about how communities have changed over time.  We took our learning outside to talk about how schools have changed from one-room school houses, to larger buildings like Ramsay school, and how they look of the building continues to change in newer communities.  

Literacy:

This week we worked on the trigraphs - 'tch' /ch/ and 'dge' /j/.  

Our new heart words were: woman, women, move, 

Math:

We finished up our work on fractions (1/2) and have started building on some mental math strategies to help us recall the answers of addition and subtraction with greater automaticity.  We even used the chromebooks and Google classroom to practice doubles.

I Can Identify What Makes Something One-Half

This week we worked on building our understanding of basic fractions and what makes something 1/2.  We started off by cutting sticky notes up and sorting them as a class into half and not half.  Next students were given the chance to do this independently and created a visual journal page of shapes cut into half and not half.  Finally, we looked at dividing a quantity of objects into two equal halves.  We will wrap up our look at fractions next week.

Literacy:

In literacy this week we spent some time looking at the syllables of words and how knowing some rules can help us read longer words.  We learned that vowels in open syllables make long songs.  We also learned that vowels in the stressed syllable make the schwa sound.

April 22 to 25

This week we enjoyed a community walk to go out and look for signs of spring. We really enjoyed to warm spring weather and seeing the changes in our natural environment.  We saw robins, woodpeckers, new leaves, green grass, free flowing river, and small flowers.

I Can Use My Senses to Explore the World Around Me

In science this week, we used our senses to to make observations about the world around us.  We carefully observed tulips with our hands, eyes, and nose.

Literacy:

This week we learned about open and closed syllables and how they affect the vowel sound.  Closed syllables have short vowels (ex. cat, bed, etc.) and open syllables have long vowels (ex. go, be, my, etc.).  We also learned about compound words and how we can look at the parts to help us read really long words.

Math:

This week in math we wrapped up our measurement unit.  We've explored length, weight, height, area, and capacity.

This week, thanks to a grant from the Dairy Farmers of Canada, we had a chance to sample different kinds of apples.  We tried Gala, Cosmic Crisp, Granny Smith, and Red Delicious apples.

I Can Explore How Actions Can Physically Change the Properties of Various Objects

In math and science we have been learning about measuring the length and weight of objects.  We have also been comparing objects based on area and capacity.  

As a culminating project, Ms. Lange had students create a shape-shifter with clay and different craft materials.  Students used what they learned about measuring weight and length to analyze their creation.  Shape-shifting their creation into another creation does not change the properties of the materials they used for their creation.

Literacy

This week we worked on the letter pattern: _ge /j/ and the ending -es.

We also learned about english words ending in v (needs an 'e' at the end) and about scribal o.  When manuscripts were copied by hand, the spelling of some words was changed from a 'u' to an 'o' because of the scribes liked the way the 'o' looked next to letters that were similar in appearance to 'u'.  Examples - come, some, none

This week we started learning about the story of Pasqueflower (crocus) told through a Blackfoot lens.  In the coming weeks, students will be preparing a display around the pasqueflower for our celebration of learning in May.

I Can Compare Objects Using Weight

Ms. Lange, our pre-service teacher, has been teaching us how to use balances to compare the weight of two objects.  This is a combined unit of study for math and science.  (Sorry - I forgot to take pictures)
