November 6 to 8

 

Thank you to the grade 5 and 6 students at our school who lead our school-wide honouring of Remembrance Day at the November 8th assembly.  

I Can Mix Primary Colours / I Can Create Organic Shapes / I Can Share My Ideas by Writing Them Down

We created a process-based project where we mixed red and yellow to create poppy colour.  We used the paint on green paper to experiment with effect.  After everything was dry, we created an organic shape to match look like a poppy.  

We read the book "What Does Peace Feel Like?".  In this compilation book, the author, Vladimir Radunsky, used the words of children to explore what peace looks like, smells, like, tastes like, sounds like, and feels like.  Afterwards, we wrote a sentence to share our own observations of peace.  

I Can Describe and Make a Movement Pathway

For science, we went outside and used chalk to create movement pathways for our friends to follow.  We worked through spiral, straight, curved, and zig-zagging lines. 

October Music Update:

This month in music, grade 1 has been learning about keeping a steady beat. We practiced moving to music with scarves and even learned a fun dance called “7 Jumps”. Our percussion skills improved this month as we practiced playing instruments such as rhythm sticks, egg shakers, and spoons.

Literacy:

This week we learned about how K can also spell the /c/ sound.  We did not add any new high-frequency words this week.

We learned how to play a new game to help us practice our decoding of words.  First we roll a dic, then read the word in that column and colour it in.  These were sent home to either finish up or use as additional practice.

Thank you for continuing to send back the black duotangs.  We will update them with decodable passages soon after we practice them at school.  It would also be helpful if all previous passages were left inside so we can refer back to them.

What a great week!  We had a lot going on - painting pumpkins with our grade 4 buddies, Halloween celebrations, and curling in gym.  

Literacy:

This week we worked on the sounds spelled by e (short vowel).

We added the high frequency word 'see'.

I Can Observe the Seasonal Changes in the World Around Me and Discuss How the Changes Are Related to the Seasons

This week went spent some time outside learning about the changing seasons.  We read the story, "This is How I Know".  In the book, an elder shares how nature provides clues to the different seasons.  We used this as a springboard for our own discussion of the observations we each had made around fall.  Afterwards we collected different leaves and made some leave rubbings.

Numeracy:

This week we continued to build our understanding how how numbers can be grouped and represented in different ways.  We will continue to use ten frames, tallies, and base ten blocks to help us think of numbers in groups.  A great way to practice at home is to practice skip counting by 5s and 10s up to 100.

 Literacy:

This week in phonics we worked on the sounds /u/ and /k/ (represented by c).  We added the words 'to' and 'do' to our list of high frequency words.  Check our Google Classroom for the home practice sheets.

In art we have been exploring how artists use lines in their work to show different things.  Sometimes the lines portray an energy or sometimes the lines create perspective, allowing us to perceive things as farther away.  Here are some of the works of art we looked at:

Part of our work has been to experiment in making different types of lines (curvy, zigzag, castle, loopy, thick, thin, etc.).  This week we took our papers and started adding watercolours to help make the lines pop out.

I Can Represent Numbers in Different Ways

This week in math, we worked with Rekenreks and ten-frames to demonstrate our understanding of teen numbers.  We played a game where we used a spinner to pick a number and then one partner used the Rekenrek and the other built the numbers on ten-frames.  Using Rekenreks and ten-frames helps us to build and deepen our conceptual understanding of a base ten number system.  The alignment and different colours of beads help us notice patterns (counting by 5s and 10s) that will help us to become fluent in strategies for mentally adding and subtracting.

Literacy:

This week our phonics focus was the letters o (short vowel sound) and d.  

We also added the words "as" and "said" to our list of practiced high frequency words (HFW).

This week we got a chance to meet with our grade 4 buddies for the first time.  We worked together to create pumpkin or apple crafts to take home.  Our buddies were fabulous in helping us understand any instructions we had trouble with!  We will be meeting with our buddy class every few weeks as a way for us to help build community within the school.

Literacy:

We spent some time review letter sounds this week and didn't add any new letters or words.  We also spent some time building up our comprehension skills by practicing retelling a story we heard.  We had to share important elements like character, setting, beginning, middle, and end.  This is something that can be easily done at home and makes a huge impact on overall reading development.
